A very strong magnitude 7.6 #earthquake just occurred in the northwest Caribbean about 125 miles south-southwest of Grand Cayman.
It was shallow, with a depth of barely 7 miles.
This was a lateral “strike slip” quake; minimal up/down motion, so very low tsunami threat. The slippage was mainly side to side.
There have been some tsunami advisories hoisted out of an abundance of caution, but honestly I expect water level rises of only a few inches.
The earthquake in the Caribbean occurred as the Caribbean Plate moves horizontally to the right (east) relative to the North American Plate (west) along the Caribbean Plate’s northern periphery. Since the opposite plate moves left from one’s vantage point, we call this a left-lateral strike-slip fault. It’s an average movement of 20 millimeters, or 0.8 inches, per year. This was NOT along the Mid-Cayman Spreading Center/Rise, but rather the Swan Islands Transform Fault.
